TishersParticipantI am sitting with my finger on the trigger to buy a BB60C (dollars allocated, ready-to-go) but I am reluctant to purchase the VSG25A as it does not extend up in to the 5 GHz band where I have some need for a signal generator. Are there plans on developing a VSG product that goes up to 6 GHz or would there be some advantages to the TG144?
I am working with QAM modulations and it seems that the VSG25A is the closest fit. Unfortunately it does not extend upwards in frequency.
Any guidance would be extremely helpful.

Tisha,
We are planning a VSG up to and beyond 6 GHz, but we do not presently have anything, and probably won’t for a year or more. For now, depending on the accuracy and linearity you need, you might consider upconverting the VSG25A output (e.g. using “evaluation kits” from Analog Devices), either using an image reject mixer or a filter to reject the image. This might be an acceptable alternative to waiting for a VSG60A or VSG200A.
Of course, there are also other affordable vector signal generators (e.g. used R&S or Agilent generators) that might provide a faster, more accurate and traceable alternative to a DIY project.
Justin CrooksModeratorThe TG124 does not have modulation capabilities, so if you need to make measurements on a modulated signal, it would not be a good fit. It is also not an ideal LO for a DIY I/Q modulator, as its phase noise is fairly high. It was really only built to be a tracking generator for our spectrum analyzers.
TishersParticipantThanks for the quick feedback, given the low price-point on the VSG25A I will go that route. My need for 2.5-6 GHz is not immediate as what I am working on now is narrowband VHF/UHF QAM. I can always come back and buy a VSG60A (tentative product) when something hits the streets.
