WD0UGParticipantWhen I try to run Signal Hound v2.15 I get a modal dialog box that says “Failed to create empty document”
What does that mean?
I’m connected to USB-SA44B
AndrewModeratorHi Wdoug,
Let me preface, version v2.15 is a older version of the software. It has been replaced with by our latest spectrum analyzer application called “Spike” which can be downloaded here. http://www.signalhound.com/Spike. It only runs on Win 7/8/10. Are you on one of these systems and would be able to try it?
If you need to stay with our older software, this message usually means that the software was unable to download the calibration file from our server. The first time our older units are ran on a particular PC, the software looks for a cal file on our server and pulls it to your PC. Ensure you have a connection to the internet before trying again. Also ensure the device is plugged in and the LED is green before running the software. If it still continues to fail, email us at support at signalhound dot com referencing this conversation and with your serial number.
If your device is older, there is a possibility the file isn’t currently on the server, which will cause the Spike software to stop on this step as well. Contact us as well if this is the issue.

A.J.
JYParticipantHi A.J.
I also encounter same issue to show “Failed to create empty document” in V2.14. But I also follow your guide to install Spike instead of V2.14. But get same result, the Spike pops up the Connection Status windows and its content is “Unable to connect to the internet or unable to fine the necessary file on the internet…..” I have checked USB-SA44B’s LED is green and my PC links internet well.PS: I installed v2.14 in our PC(Windows-XP SP3) and USB-SA44B worked well. Now I re-install Windows 7(32-Bit) in my same PC. But both v2.14 and Spike can’t work well.
JYParticipantSorry! my the serial number of my USB-SA44B is “20540419”
JY
AndrewModeratorHello JY,
These instructions are for the Spike application.
Download the calibration file for your unit here
https://signalhound.com/custdata/P2054/D20540419.binPlace this file into this directory path.
C:\ProgramData\SignalHound\cal_filesProgramData is a hidden folder so you must “Show Hidden Files/Folders” in the Windows file browser menu. If the SignalHound/cal_files folder does not exist, then go ahead and create it. Once there, rerun Spike.
I believe for the 2.14 application simply place the .bin file in the same directory as the executable in the application directory.
Let me know if you run into any issues.
Regards,
Andrew
JYParticipantHi Andrew,
It works now after following your guide. Thanks! But v2.14 still exists same issue not solved. Anyway, I just use Spike from now.Meanwhile, our breach office also has one set USB-SA44B and encounters same problem. Can we use this bin file or need to provide the serial number of this machine to you for problem solved?
Regards,
JY
AndrewModeratorHello JY,
You will need to calibration file for each SA44B you own. If you know the serial numbers for the devices I can help you get links to the calibration files.
Newer SA44B devices store the calibration file on the device itself. If you try running Spike with the other devices, it might automatically find the cal file from either the device or our server.
